Gawura Aboriginal Corporation began as the Illawarra Koori Men’s Support Group, led by local Aboriginal men, including Elders, running programs focused on improving the physical, social and spiritual well-being for the local Aboriginal community. A strong focus has been on the impact of Domestic and Family Violence on family, self and community for victim-survivors and perpetrators and early intervention programs with youth. Gawura embodies the best practice methodology with the organisation and programs being founded and run by the Aboriginal Community. Consequently, outcomes impact the individual and community with increased effectiveness because local knowledge, experience and relationships are leveraged for tailored approaches.
